A little spring training trip apparently did the Wilson Bulldogs good.

They opened their season in a big way Tuesday as Matt VanOstenbridge and Christo Hunsicker combined for 14 strikeouts in a 6-0 non-league win over visiting Boyertown.

Sophomore Ben Kulp homered and senior Nick Fiorini had a pair of singles and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.

VanOstenbridge, a senior and Penn State commit, allowed one hit and struck out nine over four innings to pick up the W. He threw 72 pitches, 42 for strikes, with four walks.

Hunsicker, a junior, picked up the save, allowing just one hit over the final three innings. He struck out five and walked just one.

Hunsicker, hitting out of the No. 3 hole, also had a double, a walk, drove in a run and scored twice.

The Bulldogs returned home Monday from Myrtle Beach, S.C. They’ll play again Friday at home against O.J. Roberts.

Wilson is picked as a top contender in the Berks Conference after reaching the championship game last season against Gov. Mifflin; the Bulldogs also reached the District 3 Class 6A title game. They went 19-9 overall.

VanOstenbridge returns as the top left-hander in the league after winning six games, saving two others, and earning All-Berks honors. He struck out 91 over a league-leading 70 1/3 innings.

The Bears fell to 0-2; they opened with an 8-2 loss Monday against Pennridge at Bear Stadium.
