Gruber and Glover connect once again: On Class 6A All-State team

Wilson has produced many outstanding tight ends over the years.
John Gilmore went on to play at Penn State and then in the NFL for 10 seasons. Andy Roland played for Duke, Tyler Beck at Bowling Green, Kurt Kelly at Lehigh, and Todd Bradburn with IUP.
Each was an All-State selection. None achieved that status a sophomore, as Michael Glover has.
The Bulldogs’ leading receiver is part of the Pennsylvania Football Writers Class 6A All-State team, along with the guy who threw him all those passes, senior quarterback Madyx Gruber, who was selected at Athlete.
They are among six players selected from the Lancaster-Lebanon League, four from Manheim Township: Senior running back Declan Clancy, senior offensive linemen Spencer McClintock and Owen Marks, and senior defensive back Donovan Rodriguez.
Calvin Everett, whose Harrisburg team beat Wilson in the District 3 championship game, is Coach of the Year. St. Joseph’s Prep quarterback Charlie Foulke is Player of the Year.
St. Joseph’s Prep, which defeated Pittsburgh Central Catholic 35-6 in the PIAA title game, has five All-State selections, as does State College, which reached the state quarterfinals. Central Catholic has four selections.
The Class 4A and 2A teams were announced earlier today. Teams for 1A, 3A, and 5A were announced Friday.
The teams are selected by a vote of sportswriters across the state.

A year ago at this time no one could’ve predicted that Glover would make such a huge leap in his first season as a starter or that Gruber would be an award-winning quarterback.
Gruber was the Bulldogs’ leading receiver as a junior and their top cover corner. He hadn’t been the No. 1 quarterback since his junior days. With the team in need of a playmaker he was moved to that critical spot and practically became an overnight sensation.
He completed 15-of-21 passes in the season-opener, threw for 233 yards in a Week 3 shootout at Nazareth and for four TDs the next week. He had a game for the ages against rival Gov. Mifflin, running for 204 yards, passing for 232 and matching a program record with five TD toss.
A rival Section 1 coach dubbed him a “magician” for his ability to make big plays out of nothing.
The same guy who led the Bulldogs to a Berks basketball championship last season used those same skills to spread the ball around and make plays.
“He (plays quarterback like) a point guard,” said Wilson Offensive Coordinator Jeremy Palm. “He feels those open guys.”
Gruber passed for 2,058 yards and 24 TDs and rushed for 702 yards and nine scores. He was named Offensive Back of the Year in Section 1 and shared the section’s Outstanding Back award with Clancy.
“He’s been the difference in our offense,” head coach Doug Dahms said after the Bulldogs clinched the Section 1 title.
Gruber also led Berks defensive players with five interceptions and was a threat in the kick return game.
Glover established himself quickly, catching a touchdown pass on the final play of the first half in a season-opening 28-20 win at Cheltenham. He soon became Gruber’s No. 1 target and one of the toughest receivers in the league to stop.
The 6-3, 225-pounder led team with 40 receptions and seven TD catches, averaging 17 yards per catch.
““Michael is our ‘do-everything’ tight end,” said Dahms. “He ran bubbles, screens, and went deep. And he’s as dominant in the run game as he is in the passing game. He set the edge for a tough run game.”
Glover is one of just four sophomores on the team.
Foulke, a 6-2 sophomore, threw for 2,481 yards and 30 touchdowns, completing 60 percent of his throws in leading Prep to an 11-2 finish.
Nazareth’s Peyton Falzone, who triggered Wilson’s only regular season loss, is one of five players picked at quarterback. The junior threw for 2,135 yards and 23 TDs, with only four interceptions. He rushed for 697 yards and eight TDs. He threw four TD passes and ran 50 yards for a score in the 35-31 win over the Bulldogs.
Harrisburg, which topped Wilson 42-14 in the district title game, has three All-State selections: Wide receiver Elias Coke, defensive end Messiah Mickens and defensive back Quincy Brannon.
